Football Aid Breaks Record at Celtic Park.
Fifty-five Celtic fans have set a new Football Aid record for the most amount of money ever raised from playing on the hallowed turf of Celtic Park.
Nearly £34,000 was raised by Hoops fans, each of whom had paid for the unique chance to pull on the famous green and white shirt and play in a 90 minute fully officiated charity football match on the 18th May 2008. A poignant tribute was paid to former Celtic and Scotland International, Tommy Burns, who had sadly passed away a few days earlier. Black arm bands were worn throughout the match and a minutes silence was observed by the players and legends, who included Vice-Patron Danny McGrain, and coach Neil Lennon, for the former midfielder, who had also generously played in Football Aid's first ever season.
The first game ended in a four-all draw, and the second game with a home win. Hoops fan Declan Brady, who had travelled up from London for Game 2, respected the clubs decision to allow the game to go ahead after the tragic week.
He said: "It was probably the best Football Aid game I have ever competed in. The poignancy surrounding the whole event was clear to see and feel.
"A word of thanks must go to Danny Mcgrain and Neil Lennon who were just fantastic on the day and a credit to themselves and the club. They recounted dressing room stories, gave us insights into club life, told us anecdotes and gave us encouragement on the pitch.
"Receiving the Man of the Match award was the icing on the cake for what was a brilliant experience."
In past years, moneys raised from this event have helped fund projects including the Scottish International Relief (SIR), the Make a Wish Foundation and the Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS), who were all nominated by Celtic Football Club.
All funds raised from the event are distributed through Football Aid's parent charity Field of Dreams, and split between Diabetes research and management programmes and other highly deserving charitable projects nominated by Celtic FC. If you would like further information regarding playing in the event, please visit the Celtic Football Aid page at www.footballaid.com or contact the sales team at info@footballaid.com
